"Digital Graffiti" Winners Announced

Alys Beach, Florida – (September 2, 2008) – Despite a thundershower that watered down Saturday evening's "Digital Graffiti" festivities, hundreds of guests were able to experience a few art projections, new open houses and a dance party that ran late into the night.

"Unfortunately, due to technical issues created by the storm, we were only able to show a few of the exhibits," said Kelli Arnold, Events Coordinator for Alys Beach. "We were especially sad for the many artists that attended, both locally and from as far away as New York. But the dance party was so much fun, and we were overwhelmed by the support and positive feedback from our friends and neighbors."

The next day, the festival's panel of industry experts reviewed each exhibit and awarded the following honors:

  • Best Photography ($500): "Feet First" by Sally Mankus of Shalimar, Florida
  • Best Still Image ($500): "Spectacular Takeover Battle" by Florian Kulhmann of Dusseldorf, Germany
  • Best Environmental Theme ($1,000): "S.O.S." by Donna Callighan of Stamford, Connecticut
  • Best Local Submission ($1,000): "SpyCam Series #2" by Janis Sawyer of Seaside, Florida
  • Most Experimental ($1,000): "Herr Bar" by Clemens Kogler of Linz, Austria
  • Best of Show ($2,500): "Futures" by Robert Seidel of Jena, Germany

Although rain prevented festival attendees from determining the "Audience Choice" award, judges decided to sponsor a special new $500 prize called the "Judges' Choice Award."

  • Judges' Choice Award ($500): "Dancing Queen" by Sumit Roy of New Delhi, India

All award-winning entries will be featured soon at www.alysbeach.com/DG.

"We were blown away by the quality and diversity of the exhibits," said Brett Phares, professor of interactive studies at Marist College in New York, and one of the festival's judges. "Alys Beach and Caliza are among the most amazing event venues we've ever seen, and we all just felt honored to be involved with this pioneering concept."

A special "artists reception" will be held at Fonville Press in Alys Beach on Friday, September 19th (weather permitting!), during which all festival exhibits will be projected in sequence in a single location for guests to enjoy.

"Although we realize that some artists might not be able to attend, we feel it's important to share and showcase all of their amazing works," said Arnold. There is no admission for the event, which will start at 8pm.

Anyone who pre-purchased tickets for last Saturday's event can receive a full refund by calling 1-866-481-8387 or or by emailing events@alysbeach.com.

Sponsor Profile - Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ)

DPZ One Celebrating its 25th year in 2005, Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ), with offices in Washington D.C., Miami and Charlotte, is a major leader in the practice and direction of urban planning, having designed over 300 new and existing communities, Alys Beach included, in the United States and overseas.  View their Project Map HERE.

DPZ’s projects have received numerous awards, including two National AIA Awards, the Vincent Scully Prize, the Thomas Jefferson Medal and two Governor’s Urban Design Awards for Excellence. The firm’s early project of Seaside, Florida, was the first authentic new town to be built successfully in the United States in over fifty years. In 1989, Time Magazine selected Seaside as one of the 10 "Best of the Decade" achievements in the field of design. The firm has been featured in other national media such as NBC News and ABC News, as well as Newsweek, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the New Yorker.

The firm is led by its Principals, Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, who are co-founders of theDPZ Two Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), recognized by the New York Times as "the most important collective architectural movement in the United States in the past fifty years." The movement, currently over 3,000 strong, marked a turning point from the segregated planning and architecture of post-war America; instead, they advocated and promoted the universal and time-tested principles of traditional planning and design that created the best-loved and most-enduring places throughout the world.

The firm’s method of integrating master plans with project-specific design codes and regulations is currently being applied to sites ranging from 10 to 10,000 acres throughout the United States. Abroad, DPZ projects are underway in Scotland, Spain, Canada, Germany, Belgium, Australia, the Philippines, Mexico, India and Turkey. Urban redevelopment plans for existing communities include: Baton Rouge, Louisiana; West Palm Beach, Naples, Sarasota, and Fort Myers, Florida; and Providence, Rhode Island. In addition, the firm is rewriting the entire City of Miami zoning code in the groundbreaking Miami 21 project.

DPZ Three DPZ has also taken a leading role in the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Working with both with the Mississippi Governor’s Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal, and the Louisiana Recovery Authority, DPZ’s designers generated plans for rebuilding at the regional, local and neighborhood scales, as well as guidelines for individual homeowners looking to rebuild. Notably, DPZ organized and led the Mississippi Renewal Forum, which generated plans for all eleven municipalites along the Mississippi Coast, conducted the Louisiana Speaks charrette series and participated in the Unified New Orleans Plan as neighborhood planners.

Duany and Plater-Zyberk’s recent book, Suburban Nation, written with Jeff Speck, was hailed as "an essential text for our time," and "a major literary event," in the national media. In 2004, Builder Magazine recognized Duany as among the 50 most influential people in home building, the ranks of which included economists, bankers and developers, apart from architects, planners and builders. Duany was ranked after Alan Greenspan, Franklin Rainee, George W. Bush and Jerry Howard, earning Duany the distinction of being the top ranking individual from the private sector. Duany sits on the board of the National Town Builders Association, and Plater-Zyberk shepherds the Knight Program in Community Building, a program that brings an interdisciplinary approach to the revitalization of inner cities. These and other efforts have earned Duany, Plater-Zyberk, and the firm at large international recognition and dozens of local and national awards in recognition of their contributions to the American built environment.

Final Events Preparations Q & A with Alys Beach Event Coordinator Kelli Arnold

The event is nearing - how are the preparations coming along?

The preparations are fun - and always interesting.  I've learned more about projectors than I thought there was to know, trudged through the dirt and have scaled a few roofs.  The result, though, is going to be spectacular!

Will most entrants be physically present for the event?

We've had an amazing response from artists who are going to be able to attend.  I'd say about half of those who have work in the show will actually be there - discussing their works and enjoying the show!

Are there still sponsorship opportunities for interested parties?

Absolutely!  Kind of like Jello, there's always room...

Are you still in need of volunteers?  What is expected of the volunteers?  Who do they need to contact if they are interested?

We are very much in need of volunteers...there are several specific spots which will require the assistance of a volunteer.

Volunteers may work in shifts or, if they're brave enough, tackle the whole event.  So, expectations are a bit varied.

Please email me directly if you're interested in helping!  events@alysbeach.com

What about projectors?

We're set with projectors, but I've never been one to turn down something good!
