Gary Justiss graduated from the Auburn University School of Architecture in the spring of 1978 and went to work at the Birmingham office of The Ritchie Organization (TRO), a Boston based architectural firm specializing in healthcare design. After several years with TRO, he had received his architectural registration and had been promoted to the position of Associate, Head of Design for the Birmingham office. During that time, Gary worked on numerous complex healthcare projects and won an AIA design award for his design of a Cancer Therapy Building in Miami, Florida.
In 1985 he was recruited by the established Birmingham architectural firm, Evan Terry Associates, to head their design department. During his seven years with ETA, Gary worked on a wide variety of building types including healthcare, religious, educational, municipal, commercial and residential projects.
After a friend called asking him to design a new home in Seaside, Florida, an active moonlight practice began. Several years and numerous houses later, moonlight turned to full time and the firm of
Gary Justiss, Architect was born. To date, Gary has designed over a hundred custom houses as well as several commercial, recreational and civic buildings. He lives and works with his wife and five children in Chelsea Alabama. The vast majority of his work is in new urbanist communities such as Mt Laurel, Seaside, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, WaterColor and Blount Springs. He has participated as an architectural consultant for numerous charrettes for Duany, Plater-Zyberk, The Architectural Charrette Team, The New Urban Guild, and the CNU.
Gary is an active member of the new urbanist and traditional architectural communities. He is a member of the Seaside Institute, The Institute of Classical Architecture, and a founding member of The New Urban Guild. He is registered to practice architecture in Alabama (#2402), Florida (#AR0015086), Tennessee (#103601),& Mississippi (#3882).
