“Digital Graffiti” Festival Draws Entries From Around the Globe

Alys Beach, Florida – (July 21, 2008) – A unique new event called “Digital Graffiti” is being hosted by Alys Beach this Labor Day Weekend to celebrate some of the world’s most talented digital artists.

The deadline for entries was July 11th, and event organizers say that they were overwhelmed by the response.

“We were flooded with nearly 150 entries from all around the world,” said Kelli Arnold, the town’s Events Coordinator. “Not only did we receive amazing submissions from local artists, but also from digital artists in New York, Los Angeles, Israel, Austria, Canada, Germany, London, India, France, Italy and even China.”

Sometimes referred to as “Photon Bombing” or “Guerilla Projection,” underground artists around the globe have started using the latest technologies to project their unique works of art onto skyscrapers and other urban structures, as a means of artistic expression. But no outdoor event has ever been organized before to celebrate these talented artists.

“We invited artists to project their works onto our town’s famous white walls,” said Arnold. “Alys Beach will literally become their blank canvas.”

To help attract artists to the Emerald Coast, Alys Beach announced $6,500 in cash prizes, including a $2,500 “Best of Show” award, and a $1,000 “Best Local Artist” award sponsored by www.30A.com. A special $1,000 prize will also be awarded to the best entry with a “green” or environmental theme.

But after receiving many more entries than expected, Arnold said that the biggest challenge now is to find more projectors.

“As you can imagine, it requires a lot of technology to host a unique event like this,” said Arnold. “Several local businesses have already offered to loan us their office projectors for that evening, but we need even more projectors to display as many entries as possible.”

The festival will be hosted by several celebrity and industry judges, including Alan Hunter, MTV's very first “VJ” and Co-Founder of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival; Terry Slaughter, President of the award-winning Slaughter Group, a strategic design and branding firm based in Birmingham, Alabama; Brett Phares, a professor of interactive media at Marist College in New York; and Warren Heaton, an award-winning digital artist, whose film, video and interactive media projects include such clients as Adobe, Microsoft, and Walt Disney Imagineering.

The festival will be held on Saturday, August 30th (Labor Day Weekend), from 8pm until 11pm. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held on Sunday, August 31st.

For more information about Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach, please visit www.alysbeach.com/DG. Individuals or businesses willing to loan a projector for this one-evening event are encouraged to call 1-866-481-8387 or email events@alysbeach.com.

Q & A with Alys Beach Town Evangelist, Mike Ragsdale

Mike, how did the idea for Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach come about?  What was the inspiration for the event?

When professional photographers and film crews first visit Alys Beach, they instantly react to all of our natural whitespace, sometimes noting that the town is really like a blank canvas. We decided to create an event that literally capitalizes on this extremely unique quality of our town.

In a past life, my friends and I used an old projector to play Mario Kart and other video games on a huge white wall in our office. And for years, my company hosted a weekly photo-editing contest on AOL called "Digital Graffiti." All of these thoughts kinda collided in my head, and the idea began to take on a life of its own. In my experience, there are some truly amazing digital artists out there, and we hope that this event will help shed some literal light on their talent.

Where did Digital Graffiti - as an art form - get it's start?

I'm not really sure. When we came up with the idea and then started doing our research, we discovered that people in some major urban centers were already doing it to project video artwork onto skyscrapers and large public venues. A few were doing it commercially, but most were "underground" artists who were doing it just for fun or political or creative expression. We've heard it called “Photon Bombing,” “Guerilla Projection,” “Projection Bombing” and “Urban Projection." The most exciting thing is that it's already out there. Like underground independent film makers of 20 years ago, these artists just need a venue that celebrates their abilities. This event is going to be a great place to do just that.

Who is the typical Digital Graffiti artist?  Urban youth?  Digital Professionals?  Hobbyists?

We've already received entries from professional photographers, ad agency execs, college professors, students and retirees. We've received nearly a hundred entries so far, coming in from everywhere from New York to Italy to California to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

Is this the first event of its kind in the country or are there other Digital Graffiti Festivals?

When we did our research, we found a similar "video art" festival in Athens, Greece and one in Tokyo. A few museums here and there have projected video art onto their gallery walls as well. But the key difference is that this event will be outdoors. Few other places in the world have as much beautiful outdoor whitespace as Alys Beach, and that's certainly going to be a memorable trademark of the evening.

Will Alys Beach be hosting a Digital Graffiti event every year?

I hope so, but ultimately, it will depend on the success of the event and concept. It's really extremely experimental. It might be a one-time event, or who knows--it might become an annual festival that one day attracts spectators and artists from around the globe. Only one thing is certain -- this year's event is going to be extraordinary.
